California Medical Board Accuses Octomom's Doctor of Negligence

Dr. Michael Kamrava, the Beverly Hills fertility doctor who treated "Octomom" Nadya Suleman, has been accused by the Medical Board of Californai of exhibiting a pattern of Gross Negligence, including creating a stockpile of unused frozen embryos serving no clinical purpose. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Times reported that according to a formal 13-page accusation conducted by the state medical board, Dr. Kamrava transferred an excessive number of embryos on six occasions.
According to the document, the number of embryos transferred by the doctor in July 2008 was so beyond the norm that they, "should not be transferred into any woman, regardless of age". The transfer, which resulted in octuplets was deemed, "beyond the reasonable judgment of any treating physician" according to the board.
Additionally, the Beverly Hills doctor failed to administer a mental health evaluation for the single mother, and repeatedly helped Ms. Suleman create fresh embryos even though she already had numerous frozen embryos. Finally, the document cites that Kamrava kept insufficient records and negligently prescribed Suleman with dangerously high fertility drugs.
Kamrava is in danger of losing his medical liscence if the accusations are deemed valid. Attorney Peter Osinoff spoke on his clients behalf, stating that "the medical guidelines on embryo trsnfers are guidelines only, and not the law." Addditioonally, the attorney pointed out that there are no standards requiring mental health evaluations for patients.
In the months after the octoplets birth, both Kamrava and Suleman have been the subjects of intense public scrutiny. Fertility experts have accused Kamrava of excessive embryo transfer and the American Society of reproductive Medicine banned the doctor in September.
